The Conquest of Everest – by Sir John Hunt
Here in 2026, and over the past decade or so, scaling to the summit of Mount Everest is nearly a “mundane” activity and achievement for avid mountain climbers and hikers. The trail leading to the “top of the world” has been in the news with photos of litter and actual lines of people. This is how popular this quest has become.
But it was not always this way.
In 1953, a British expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary became the first to scale Everest, and this book- also published in 1953- tells the true tale of how they accomplished this miraculous feat. Included is a chapter on the final ascent written by Edmund Hillary himself.
To some this book may feel and read a bit boring at times, as there is tremendous detail given of the minutiae of the planning stages and mountaineering. But overall, this is an excellent true story of man’s desire for accomplishing the impossible, while overcoming the trials along the way.
